Nigeria’s efforts towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals by the expiration of the 2030 deadline as well as achieving inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all need careful assessment and learning from the failure experienced in accomplishing Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
However, the current realities indicate that the country need to be more proactive in order to genuinely achieve SDG 4 because of the persistence of the factors that hindered the satisfactory achievement of MDG 2 on educational development. The assertion is premised on the fact that about 10.5 million children out of school, high illiteracy level, regional enrolment disparities – 90% in the southern zones and as low as 19.91% in the Northern zones, absence of data and key indicators on educational progress, infrastructural deficit and decay, unqualified teachers, inadequate instructional materials, the absence of outcomes-based monitoring and evaluation amongst others.
It is very crucial to make use of data in conducting critical and comprehensive evaluation for assessment of the level of progress made and what still need to be done in order to accomplish the international commitment on educational development. However building and sustaining a data system remains an herculean task. The recognition of the potency of data and information management in attaining improved and global competitive education sector made a lot countries to commit huge resources to the realization of a functioning Education Management Information System (EMIS) but a lot of the countries have not been able to effectively accomplish it.
There have been paradigm shift in EMIS from using data narrowly for counting students and schools to being used to drive system-wide innovations, accountability, professionalization, track progress and outcomes and facilitate quality learning. Therefore, the development and use of EMIS is an innovative approach that facilitates the use of appropriate information for better planning, better decision-making and better results. Consequently, relevant, timely, accurate educational statistics and consistent functioning of EMIS are key determinants for tremendous transformation of the education sector.
Sequel to the aforementioned, this training workshop has been designed to enhance the capacity of participants in the aspects of requisite strategies, approaches, knowledge and skills in EMIS development and management which will help them in making better and relevant decisions that are timely and effective for holistic improvement of the country’s educational system and its key beneficiaries.
